At the heart of the ILAVIZ workshop lies a deep appreciation for the natural world and the timeless magic of raw, organic materials. For centuries, wooden toys have been the silent companions of childhood, encouraging imagination through simplicity. In this journal entry, we take you behind the scenes of our workshop to explore how our signature pieces are made.
The Selection of Organic Timber
Every toy begins its life as a carefully selected block of wood. We source only sustainably harvested timbers, predominantly beech, maple, and birch. These woods are chosen for their exceptional durability, fine grains, and safe, non-splintering properties. By selecting robust organic hardwoods, we ensure that every toy can withstand decades of play and be passed down to future generations.
"Craftsmanship isn't just about shaping materials; it's about embedding love and sustainability into a physical object that a child will hold, discover, and cherish."
Precision and Hand-Carving
Once the wood is seasoned and inspected, our master artisans sketch the designs directly onto the surface. Using a combination of modern precision machinery and old-world hand tools, each curve is sculpted with absolute devotion. The tactile feedback of a hand-sanded edge cannot be replicated by automated factories. We spend hours polishing every corner to ensure a buttery-smooth feel that delights small hands.
Non-Toxic and Safe Finishes
Safety is our absolute priority. We never coat our toys in plastic-heavy polyurethane. Instead, we use a water-based, hypoallergenic dye or natural beeswax and flaxseed oil blends. These finishes let the organic texture of the wood grain shine through while providing natural protection. Parents can rest easy knowing that even if these toys end up in a teething baby's mouth, they are 100% safe, organic, and toxin-free.
