ANTI GRAVITY MAGNETIC LEVITATION
Magnetic Levitation is a way to suspend objects in air without any support, as if in defiance of gravity. An unsung phenomenon of the past which is now being put to use in a variety of interesting and useful applications.
Magnetic levitation, maglev,
or magnetic suspension is a method by which an object is suspended with no support
other than magnetic fields. Magnetic force is used to
counteract the effects of the gravitational acceleration and any
other acceleration.
The two primary issues involved in magnetic levitation
are lifting forces: providing an upward force sufficient to
counteract gravity, and stability: ensuring that the system does
not spontaneously slide or flip into a configuration where the
lift is neutralized.
Magnetic levitation is used for maglev trains, contactless melting, and magnetic bearings and for product
display purposes.
Maglev is short for Magnetic Levitation in which trains float on a guide way using the principle
of magnetic repulsion. Each magnet has two poles. Now if you play with two magnets, you'll realize that
opposite poles attract, whereas similar poles repel. This repulsive property of magnets is used
in Maglev Levitation as well as in Maglev trains.
HOW IT WORKS
In this project the magnets are spaced an equal distance apart and have
the same polarity facing up. We have arranged the ring magnets in such
a way that repel each other.
One magnet is placed onto the pen so that they are the same distance
apart. We have attached a small metal board card at the tip of the pen
so the pen point can rest against it.
Blow the Fan blade and it spun like crazy! And pen floats in the air.
EXPLANATION:
All magnets, whether natural or electromagnets, have two poles. We all known
that like poles repel and unlike poles attract. Magnetic levitation is the product of the repulsion
generated as a result of two magnetic fields. An object is said to be levitated when the force
created by electromagnetic repulsion equalizes the weight of the object. Technically, it's the
electromagnetic force counteracting the gravitational force
Attraction & Repulsion of Magnets , These principles govern the levitation of maglev trains. Permanent
magnets are always magnetic. Electromagnets are magnetic only when an electric current flows through
them.
As a child you must have seen a ping pong ball being levitated on an air stream at the output pipe of a
vacuum cleaner. Magnetic levitation, also known as maglev is used in a similar way to levitate objects in air
without any support, using magnetic field.
Magnetic levitation is the use of magnetic fields to levitate a (usually) metallic object. Manipulating
magnetic fields and controlling their forces can levitate an object. In this process an object is suspended
above another with no other support but magnetic fields.
The electromagnetic force is used to counteract the effects of gravitation. But it has also been proved that it
is not possible to levitate using static, macroscopic, `classical' electromagnetic fields.
The forces acting on an object in any combination of gravitational, electrostatic, and magnetostatic fields
will make the object's position unstable. The reason a permanent magnet suspended above another
magnet is unstable is because the levitated magnet will easily overturn and the force will become attractive.
If the levitated magnet is rotated, the gyroscopic forces can prevent the magnet from overturning.
PRESENT AND FUTURE USE
Maglev train is a famous application of the maglev technology . Almost all the prominent countries have
these trains as a major mode of transport in their system. Apart from this, maglev toys are also quite
famous and are available in all the markets. Some of the famous maglev toys are maglev toy train, maglev
toy cars, maglev clocks etc.
Future might see maglev technology put to use in a variety of applications. Maglev cars are supposed to be
under development. These cars won’t require a track but would fly in air. NASA is working on a maglev
catapult that is predicted to reduce the costs and launching problems of a spacecraft. Also, Maglev
elevators are already made and soon be put to use in Japan and China.
